Influencing Diet - Ed Tooley Nutrition
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ed Tooley, Founder of Ed Tooley Nutrition Ltd., located in Liverpool, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is predominantly based on my consultancy. I am a performance nutritionist working with any individual/team/group looking to increase their performance via nutrition and lifestyle. I mainly consult with elite and amateur athletes about their sporting performance, but my work also extends to improving performance in the corporate setting and with individuals who have health and/or performance goals. In addition to my performance consultancy
Tell us about yourself
I was acting as a consultant, but underemployment also required me to do other roles. After working like this for a few years (and learning a lot in that time), I decided to get the best out of myself for my clients; I wanted to go freelance and focus on my delivery to athletes, teams, and businesses. I spent time speaking to self-employed practitioners on the pros and cons and, importantly... how to set up before taking that leap and setting up. This gives me extra motivation as there is no fallback. I either put in the work to build a reputation and make an income, or I don't, and life becomes a little more difficult.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think just getting to where I am right now. It took a lot of hard work to establish the business, build my reputation, and survive through adversity (adapting the business through lockdown, sudden changes in contracts due to new personnel within teams, etc.). From a client point of view, there has been a lot of silverware that's amazingly rewarding when teams or athletes succeed like this, but also up there are young athletes who have come to me with three-year goals of international age-grade selection and signing with a professional team, and the athlete being successful with these goals and their dream becoming true.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Not taking things personally. Where my business is just me and the service is essentially me, it took a while for me to not take everything personally, whether that be someone not paying or a contract being renewed. You have to try to see the positives in situations and be pretty resilient.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be prepared to graft.
- Be true to yourself.
- Persevere.
