Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in event planning but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lynn Easton, Founder of Easton Events, located in Charleston, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Easton is a luxury destination event planning company. We specialize in complex (primarily) tented events all over the world, with a heightened emphasis on delivering a high-touch guest experience. You can find the majority of our clients on the Forbes list!
Tell us about yourself
My career in production began in the entertainment sector as a television producer for NBC News. This role translated into the event world, as we think of ourselves as the “executive producer” of each event, micro-managing all of the “bits and pieces” of the greater picture.
The joy of the job stems from travel! We are lucky enough to have clients that fly us all over the globe to execute parties in some pretty exotic corners of the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would have to say building this company (Easton) from my guest cottage in the backyard and emerging as a hospitality and event industry leader out of a completely tertiary market (Charlottesville, VA). Keep in mind that wedding planners didn’t really “exist” in the way they do now 30 years ago, so we collectively have come a long way!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
- Protecting your brand!
- Making the hard, right decisions - whether that is letting someone go, onboarding someone new, buckling down financially, or taking financial risk for a greater gain.
- “It all starts from the top” theory - consciously leading in a way that will empower the generations below you and set the tone for success - whatever that looks like for your company.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Tackle your least favorite tasks head-on, always first thing in the morning.
- Work smart - implement systems that protect you from yourself.
- I follow 4 piece of advice from a trusted friend: Work Hard, Hire Well, Fight Nice, Have Fun.
