Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Donna Nield, Owner of East Village Acupuncture, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a busy community acupuncture clinic in the East Village (NYC). Our patients come from all over the city to be seen for a variety of concerns, from muscular-skeletal pain to anxiety and depression. We also treat a lot of COVID-19 long-haul symptoms. We are open 7 days a week so that our services are accessible.
Tell us about yourself
I studied acupuncture as a second career, and while I was still in school, I had the idea to bring a low-cost acupuncture clinic to the community I had lived in for the last 25+ years.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am very proud that I built this business from the ground up and that, together with my staff, we have helped thousands of patients over the last 6 1/2 years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I have found it challenging to manage staff schedules. We are a small business and don't have a large staff, so finding coverage when needed can be tricky.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you are renting a storefront, make sure that you have a good landlord who isn't going to try to raise your rent every chance they get. If you are hiring staff, get a good HR person to help. Find a business advisor through a nonprofit business incubator; they can be a great resource and can help with your business plan before you open.
