Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yoni Banayan, Founder of Earth's Edge Wellness, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Earth's Edge Wellness is the name of my business. Our customers are people who are struggling with anything food, body, or exercise related. We help people with binging, food restriction, purging, and exercise addiction using a dynamic and multi-leveled approach. People generally come to us if:
- They want a more spiritual approach to healing.
- They are looking to live life and not just cope with life.
- They are going to college, working, or stay-at-home parents who cannot uproot their lives.
- They have already tried therapy, dietitians, or eating disorder treatment and are looking for something that really works.
Tell us about yourself
I never planned on opening Earth's Edge Wellness or any company past my private practice. I was a marriage and family therapist who happened to have specialized in the treatment of eating disorders. I got offered a job to move to Las Vegas to help start a treatment center and thought it would be a nice opportunity to create something unique to help people. While my team was gifted, the company owner focused on profit to the detriment of a vulnerable population (mental health). After a certain amount of time, I realized things would not change. Through this process, I realized a few fundamentals that inspired me to open something of my own:
- People do not heal if they do not invest, hence why treatment centers have a relapse rate of over 70 percent: most clients use insurance.
- What creates change is not coping skills or knowledge; what creates change is what state you are in.
- People who have eating disorders or any other disorder that affects their chance of survival are putting something in front of their own life because they subconsciously are looking for a deeper, more spiritual life.
- People do not change because they do not integrate what they learn with reality, so it becomes an inspiring notion with no tangible change.
- Real change, ESPECIALLY with eating disorders, requires the awareness and mastery of body sensations, not just intellectual conversations with therapists and group therapy.
When I realized these things, I saw that there were no programs in the world that do this. In fact, when I was working on my SEO on my website, the search words I wanted to use did not exist as a search in America. "No one has searched for holistic eating disorder treatment." My biggest motivation is that I am certain that my gifts are given to me to be of service to other humans, and that is part of why I am on this planet. People need help, and I knew I could help them and reliably get them results quicker and more sustainably than a sterile treatment center. So I got a team of like-minded people: gifted holistic individual thinkers and leader personalities who were sick of the system but not sick of helping people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My two biggest accomplishments: were that I kept going. I can't count the number of times I considered closing down and giving up. My other biggest accomplishment is our success rate: over 95 percent of our clients get results within the first week. I see them change in front of my eyes, and it is beautiful and worth the struggle to get here.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is that there is no paved road, no one to tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, no one to tell you how things will go and whether your investment of time, emotions, or energy was the right things to do. There is only a light at the end of the tunnel when you believe there is.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know yourself: what are you meant to be/do?: if you use your natural skills, you will find your work easier and smoother.
- Know God/infinity/something bigger than yourself: there is only so much wisdom and game planning you can do. You have to accept that someone or something bigger than your current conscious awareness is guiding you to help you and the rest of humanity. When you fall into this awareness, you have unlimited resources and energy, and you are unstoppable.
- Be in close contact with someone who has successfully created (at least one) business themselves.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Have fun! Yes, you need to hustle, but don't forget that the whole point is to help you and others out, so keep in that state as much as possible. Take breaks, meditate, love yourself, and spend time in nature and in something outside of work.
