Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lexy Gerkensmeyer, Owner of Earthbound Birth Services, located in Ventura, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a full-spectrum doula, I offer informational, emotional, and physical support to expecting parents throughout preconception, pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum. I support parents through miscarriages, as well as people who are seeking an abortion. I also offer placenta prints and encapsulation services. My services are not limited by one's race/ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, age, ability, spiritual beliefs, medical history, or socioeconomic status.

Tell us about yourself

I found a passion for alternative medicine in college. After having my own baby in 2021, I knew I wanted to work in the birth profession. I began as a birth doula and have since expanded to offer postpartum doula support, placenta encapsulation, and more to come. The reward that comes from helping new parents navigate this journey makes the long nights and odd hours worth it. It is always an extreme honor to hold space for such a special time in a new family's life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finding the patience to allow my business to grow has been my biggest accomplishment. In less than two years, I have done more with my business than I even planned to, but it took a lot of time before I started to see much growth. Some of my original goals haven't been met yet, but there were so many surprise goals along the way that I've accomplished.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Putting yourself out there. Even if you are normally a social person, it can be hard to talk to another professional, "do you want to meet with me so we can network together?" and then sit with a total stranger and talk about your business. Especially when you're the new kid on the block, and some of your prospective "co-workers" are licensed medical professionals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fake it till you make it. You are never going to get good at something until you start, and usually, learning on the job is the best way to learn.
  2. Do your research beforehand on what it actually takes to run the business you want. Try to consider all the weird little details of being "a business owner."
  3. Give your business and yourself time and patience. You will likely hit some roadblocks, and it takes a while for a business to take off. Be gentle with yourself, and don't lose sight of your goal.
