To Nurture and Make Things - Earth to Alix

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alix Camp, Founder of Earth to Alix, located in Ventura, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have an Energy Healing Practice called “Earth to Alix,” where I treat one-on-one clients, lead moon circles and cacao ceremonies, and teach reiki certification courses. My customers are sensitive and powerful humans who tend to take on a lot from their environment or the people around them. Maybe they’ve always felt intuitive or curious about the healing arts and are seeking someone to open the door to that world. I have many people who are brand new to energy healing.

Tell us about yourself

When I was in my early 20s, I was having a rough time. I was so far out of alignment physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I was in chronic pain for a year, recovering from a bad car accident. I was smoking A TON of weed and drinking A LOT to deal. I was working a job I hated, recently dumped by a long-term boyfriend. I moved back home to my mom’s house in Hawaii and worked on healing my body by doing super gentle Iyengar yoga, eating whole organic foods, and swimming in the warm ocean. When my body was healed, I quit my job and moved to California. The first week I was there, I connected with herbalists and energy healers with no effort on my part; I was so naturally guided to these people! In my first Reiki training, I knew this was what I was meant to do, though I resisted it for years. I practiced only on myself and close friends for three years before opening my business. Now I am 33 with a thriving practice and just recently opened a wellness center, a clubhouse for sensitive souls. I hope to help people like my 21-year-old self. We all lose our way from time to time. People need someone to turn to. I hope I can be that person for my community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping individuals in my community feel safe. From safety, magic grows. I get the most heartwarming, satisfying feeling when I see my clients and students shine.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Continuing to follow your instincts. There are a lot of people who are going to think they know better than you and will try to tell you what to do with your business. Learning to trust yourself, your body, and what feels right is crucial for both your vision and success. I’ve always had a bit of trouble trusting my intuition; those societal fears creep in. Oftentimes friends and family will want to protect you and suggest that you play it safe. Others will suggest extreme, overly optimistic leaps of faith. Only you can know! In the past, I’ve lost sight of my own inner knowing. Now I know when I carry things out in the way I want is what feels best and also the most successful. It’s always scary to create something that’s never been done before. Trusting yourself is terrifying. Know you can figure it out and do it your way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember that no one knows what they are doing on this planet. Not really. If you have an idea or an inner spark, why not try it?
  2. Prioritize still having fun. Do things for yourself. You are your business; when you feel good, your biz does well.
  3. Stay organized as best you can! I’m learning this now and wish I had started earlier.
