Authentic Crystals and Handmade Jewelry - Earth & Elm
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma McCarty, Founder of Earth & Elm, located in Ponoka, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I make gemstone jewelry, candles and sell crystals. Part of my jewelry making is electroforming. Electroforming is a process of suspending jewelry into acid to form copper onto any formed surface electrically. My customers are anyone who has a love for authentic gems. I attract a major part of the witchy community but also people interested in geology. It’s a neat balance.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business while on maternity leave. I needed a creative escape from motherhood. The process of creation seems to be very beneficial for my mental health. I ended up becoming so busy that I did not need to return to work which has allowed me to stay at home with my daughter and take control of my schedule.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Maintaining growth after two children and making more money from my hobby than my career as an educational assistant.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, I’m constantly struggling to balance spending enough time with my children and making sure the work is getting done.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it.
- Pay people to do things that are not worth your time.
- Make sure you are financially secure. Starting a business will not pay your bills right away.
