Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patrick Vuong, owner of Dynasty Gym, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Dynasty Gym - a fitness facility and community that strives to inspire and empower all of those we reach. Our athletes come from every walk of life, from an aging grandmother to the youth soccer player. We are here to help you reach your fitness goals.

Tell us about yourself

I was working in the fitness industry for other people for over ten years before I decided that I should work for myself instead. I do what I do every day because of my athletes, who need me to hold them accountable and keep them motivated to reach their goals. It's a team effort.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing the company by doubling the revenue in our first year in business (we bought the business from previous owners) and increasing revenue every year since. We've also grown our team by 40% since we started and have created multiple upper management level jobs for our most senior employees, and have even made some of the partners.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being accommodating to everyone. As a business owner, any decision you make will come under scrutiny. You will get pushed back from even the most well-intentioned choices you make. How to deal with that is an art - you must communicate clearly that your decision is best for the community overall, not just for a select few.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Niche the niche. If you want to have a clear vision, you must narrow down who your customer is and cater to their specific needs.
  2. Delegate. Once you have too much on your plate, start prioritizing more higher-level duties and trade in money for lower-level tasks.
  3. Empower your team daily. Keep your team motivated to do their best every day. It's a privilege that they chose to work with you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember where you came from and how you started. When things are good, it's easy to forget how much of a struggle it was to get started. Don't let go of the gas pedal, or you will slow down. Keep your eyes on the horizon for new ideas that will inspire you.
