Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karissa Surprenant, owner of Dtails, located in Smithfield, RI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Dtails is a pet spa, boutique, and nutrition center. We love making beautiful but also feel as though beauty begins on the inside. The stylists have multiple certifications, including AKC Safe grooming, CPR, and skin & coat. We use higher-end products tailored to your pet's specific needs. In our boutique, you can find healthy treats, chews, raw food, and toppers. We also carry chic clothing and collars.
Tell us about yourself
I started in the pet industry when I was in middle school. I dropped my dog PeeWee off at the groomer and was fascinated by what went on there. I applied for a job to help around the salon and fell in love with it. I'm motivated by my own personal dogs; I wish to see everyone's dogs clean, happy, and healthy like they are.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far would be opening my second location. Dtails joined the town of Cumberland this past June.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest parts of running a business is managing employees, all while trying to manage the business and still be able to groom them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Look into the type of business you are actually opening.
- Do your homework.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help from others in your field. Seek out the advice of a mentor.
