What's your business, and who are your customers?
Draft is a small interaction design consultancy. We increase profit for Shopify Plus stores, and we teach other value-based designers everything we know.
Tell us about yourself
I have 17 years of experience in classical user experience design as of press time. I founded Draft after a few years of dissatisfaction with W-2 jobs, and I knew I could get started myself. I'm deeply driven by questioning business as usual and making technology serve the needs of customers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a stable, durable design practice for over 10 years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Self-care. Every business owner should go into therapy, work strongly on care and rest, and work hard to come home to themselves. Capitalism works against this.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- The first year is the hardest.
- Business is fundamentally performed in relationship to others. You cannot do it alone. Find your people.
- You will absolutely not get it right the first time.
