Have the Courage to Transition Your Career - Dr. Twanna Carter
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Twanna Carter, Founder of Twanna Carter Professional & Personal Coaching, LLC, located in Bowie, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Twanna Carter Professional & Personal Coaching, LLC is my business. As a career coach, I work with stressed, busy women executives who are plagued by impostor syndrome, self-criticism, and doubt to alleviate their stress so that they can find peace of mind and fully focus on excelling in their careers.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up around the military and received my bachelor's degree in Zoology/Chemistry from Alabama A&M University, graduating as a Distinguished Military Student and Distinguished Military Graduate. I was also a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the United States. I served a tour in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 1990-1991. After leaving the military, I taught school in Florida for 4 years before relocating to Alabama. I worked 9 years providing services to veterans and their families with the Department of Veterans Affairs. I attended Capella University and received a Ph.D. in Human Services in May 2014. Now, I am a Career Transition Coach who helps high-achieving professional women overcome the fear and anxiety that comes with transitioning to a new career. I admit I was late finding my passion because of social anxiety and transition fear. I am passionate about helping women transition to careers that align with their true purpose.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In 2021, I was able to leave my 6-figure and become an entrepreneur full-time.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being able to separate your feelings from the emotions of your customers or clients because it's easy to take things personally when you're putting yourself out there in such an intimate way. Starting out, rejection can seem very painful.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose a business you're passionate about because if you don't love what you do, it will show in your work, and your customers will know it.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes—they're inevitable! Failure is feedback. Use it as a lesson or blessing.
- Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Otherwise, the entrepreneurial journey can isolate you.
