Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Tamara Rosier, Founder of ADHD Center of West Michigan, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The ADHD Center of West Michigan helps people understand how ADHD affects every aspect of their lives. All our team members either have ADHD or our lives have been affected by it, so we get it. We understand the nuances and frustrations that come with this diagnosis, so we don't have a one-size-fits-all approach. We start with where our clients are and then help them get to where they want to be.

Because ADHD is our sole focus, we're trained to skillfully walk with you on this journey. Our team comprises ADHD coaches, medication education coaches, ADHD-informed therapists, an ADHD-informed academic coach, and a speech pathologist.

Tell us about yourself

I am an accidental business owner. That is to say that I didn't start out intending to develop a full-service ADHD Center. I began as an ADHD Coach, a solopreneur. As I was working with my clients, I often thought, "I wish that this client had access to a ..." So I started recruiting people to join my team. That was eight years ago, and now we have 12 excellent professionals who have joined and added their expertise to The ADHD Center. I joke that we are like The Justice League, a team of superheroes (from DC Comics), and we assemble as a team to tackle the especially formidable villain of ADHD.

My clients and their families are the reason why I do what I do. I love hearing their stories about how they are learning new ways to manage life with ADHD.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of the team that I have attracted. They are incredibly knowledgeable and talented individuals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I seek input from many sources as I make decisions about the business, but ultimately, it comes down to what I decide.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan on working your tail off. It will take a lot of elbow grease to get a business going. Expect long hours but remember that it won't be forever.
  2. You may need to do many of the positions as you build your business. Know how your business works from the inside out.
  3. Most importantly, be a learner. Be compulsive about it. Read everything you can, talk to everyone, and apply it all to make your business the best experience for your client. Turn any failures into learning experiences.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I wrote a book, "Your Brain's Not Broken," that brought a lot of national and international attention to the ADHD Center that we probably would not have had. I had just planned on creating a regional center.
