Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luvraj Sandhar, founder of Dr. Sandhar Wellness, located in Brampton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is servicing clients with chiropractic care. Along with this, we dispense medical equipment tailored to clients' needs. I treat athletes, and that is a passion of mine, focusing on sports injury management and concussion rehabilitation.
Tell us about yourself
I graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2015 and worked in Edmonton for two years before moving back to Toronto, Ontario. I am certified in medical acupuncture and have an interest in treating sports injuries. I got started working on my own business straight out of school, but I took time to talk to accountants to figure out what strategies would work well for my business before I incorporated them. What motivates me every day is the impact I can have on my local community and help people improve their quality of life by not living in pain.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I will say this directly, probably surviving COVID lockdowns! It was very challenging as a business owner, to say the least, and it has taught me to be resilient, patient, creative, and empathetic towards myself and my patients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come along with being a business owner is handling stressful situations and managing your own time. We get very invested in the day-to-day process that we sometimes don't take time for ourselves because we feel we are being unproductive. The key is to prioritize tasks that are important for that day and then translate that into weekly, monthly, and yearly goals.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first tip is not to always worry about your competitors. If you feel you have a unique service or product to provide your customers, focus on that and worry less about what your competitors are doing. This will take away time you can use to build your brand instead. The second tip is to surround yourself with people who challenge you and not always say "yes." Your staff or employees matter, and who you hire will affect your business. The third tip is to always have an exit strategy. In case things don't work out according to plan, it is always a good idea to have a way out financially because your values and goals change over time, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Be passionate about what you do as a business owner. People feed off of positive energy, so focus on that!
