What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a naturopathic medical practice; we serve people with chronic, complex illnesses such as Lyme disease and mold toxicity, as well as hormone and digestive disorders.

Tell us about yourself

I always loved health and fitness - I grew up in Australia, and it was a way of life for us. I graduated from naturopathic medical school in 2003 and moved to San Diego, worked for another clinic for a couple of years, and then started my own practice. I love what I do, and it's very rewarding to be able to help people that have not been able to find help elsewhere.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, it's been taking new graduates into my practice and mentoring them, watching them grow and develop as practitioners. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was brand new in practice, even though it was 19 years ago - and I try to provide my junior naturopathic doctors the support and development that I wish I'd had as a young graduate.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the best parts of owning a business is having the freedom and flexibility to choose your own schedule, plan your vacations, etc. But the flip side of that is that when I'm not there seeing patients, I'm not earning any income. That can be challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Firstly, find your niche and your specialty, and really go after it. You can't be everything to everyone. Secondly, my advice is always to start small and grow organically; that way, you can achieve success without going into huge debt or investing large amounts of your own money upfront. Thirdly, I'd say recognize that you may have to work hard in the early years to reap the rewards and be able to relax a bit in the later years.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I love having my own business; I wouldn't trade it for anything. It can come with its challenges, but the rewards are great.
