Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Natasha Williams, Owner of N.S. Williams Psychology Professional Corporation, located in Toronto, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Clinical Psychologist, owner, and operator of N.S. Williams Psychology Professional Corporation and one of the founding Directors of Allied Psychological Services. I operate an anti-oppressive, judgment-free psychological practice that offers psychological services to individuals, groups, students, health care professionals, corporations, and organizations.
Tell us about yourself
I have been a Clinical Psychologist for over 15 years, and I started my business when I graduated from school. Initially, it was primarily a clinical practice, offering assessment, psychotherapy, and supervision services. It has now expanded to include international speakers, best-selling authors, corporate and organizational training, professor, research and academic journal, and textbook publishing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest accomplishments is growing from a sole proprietor business to a clinic with administrative and HR staff and contract employees from varied allied mental health disciplines. We have been able to increase our ability to serve more people and increase our positive impact on the world.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things as a business owner is to figure out when you need help. I used to be the one-stop, "do it all" business. If you want your business to grow, you need to know when to trust others to assist you. I was scheduling my appointments, creating and sending invoices, following up with unpaid invoices, answering inquiry calls, conducting intakes, managing my social media, etc.
Once I was able to find people that I trust to assist me with those tasks, it allowed me to find the time to conduct the clinical work and allow my business to grow and help more people.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand what your specific gifts and talents are. We all have God-given talents. Take the time to do the inner work necessary to tap into them. Your business will not be successful if you are a "jack of all trades and a master of none."
- Determine your audience and how your gifts and talents address/solve a problem that they have. This provides you with direction and focuses when starting your business, as well as a clear roadmap for growing your business in the future.
- Let go and be patient. Many people lack the patience to succeed in business and possibly believe that if you are not an overnight success that you have failed. Starting, running, and growing a business takes time, patients, and the willingness to let go of certain expectations and be open to new and unexpected paths that may present themselves along the way.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You have everything that you need to be successful. With faith, hard work, and determination, anything is possible. It is possible to be successful and create the life that you desire on your own terms and make a positive impact on the community and, ultimately, the world.
There are no limits to what we can achieve and accomplish!
