Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Milena Spasojevic, Founder of Dr. Mila Psychology, located in Calgary, AB, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dr. Mila Psychology is a virtual practice providing culturally-informed and compassionate mental health care to adults, couples, and families in Ontario and Alberta. While I specialize in trauma, my passion is connecting with anyone who is open to doing the work to understand themselves in a new light.

Tell us about yourself

I love connecting with people in an authentic way, so it was a natural process for me to become a clinical psychologist. As an immigrant, carving out my own path was always ingrained, and it has become increasingly important for me to live a life that aligns with who I want to be in all spheres of my life. What motivates me every day is my passion for immersing myself in another person's experience and working together to help them find the best path forward for themselves. It is a true gift to love what you do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While it may be brand new, my biggest accomplishment is taking the leap to start my business where I can do things my way, fully be myself, and help support others in doing the same. Stay tuned for more on this question!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I have decided to be a solo practitioner and handle all of the administrative and billing myself, so doing it all has been a learning curve for me. Unfortunately, many health practitioners receive little to no business training, so while I have been figuring it out as I go, it has been a rewarding process to recognize a variety of capabilities that have gone beyond my clinical training.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Learn as much as you can about the processes necessary to run your business so you can speak the language of anyone you might need along the way (e.g., accountants, lawyers, administrative support, etc.). As you identify the roles you need, find people for those roles that you can trust. And lastly, learn to trust yourself most and never lose sight of who you are no matter what situations you find yourself in.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In a perfect world, everyone would seek out and have access to therapy because everyone could use it at some point in their lives. If it is something that you can access, do it. There is no blueprint for life, and everyone could use a confidante whose role is to become an expert on you. And lastly, if you go or have gone but don't feel the benefits, it might mean that you and the mental health professional aren't a good fit. The relationship is everything, and there is someone out there for everyone.
