Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mike Hadbavny, Chiropractor Doctor at Murray Chiropractic Group, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a chiropractor in Victoria, BC, and I treat everyone from national-level athletes to the average weekend warrior. To me, everyone is an athlete! It doesn't matter if you run on a soccer pitch or walk 20km delivering mail; the body adapts to what you do. I have worked with various local, provincial, and national level athletes, including Tennis Canada, Pacific FC, Victoria Highlanders FC, Victoria Ironman, and BC Summer and Winter Games. My focus has been on athletes in contact sports such as hockey, football, and rugby. I have a keen eye for athletic and movement assessment, sideline evaluations, and athletic taping. My passion is for sport and allowing others to achieve optimal function.

Tell us about yourself

Having suffered my own sports injuries growing up, my interest in sports medicine peaked at a young age. I enjoy going into the office each day to help people get out of pain, move better, and live their best life. I graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Brock University. Completing my chiropractic sports fellowship provided me with advanced knowledge on how to handle sport-related injuries. Over the years, I have collected various certifications such as Emergency First Responder from the Canadian Red Cross and player safety from Hockey Canada and World Rugby. I proudly serve as the Director of Vancouver Island for the British Columbia Chiropractic Association.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my own successful practice and finishing my chiropractic sports fellowship. It is a fellowship through the Royal College of Sports Chiropractic (RCCSS) in sports sciences and requires an additional five years of post-graduate training. Through academics and fieldwork, you gain an extensive experience with complicated sports injuries.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The amount of effort and work it takes as a start-up. There are also no shortcuts. People will always try to sell you a quick fix, but nothing replaces putting in the best effort that you can, and your patients or customers will take notice.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick something you are passionate about. It sounds cliché, but if you enjoy what you do for a living, you will never work a day in your career!
  2. Do your research. If you are looking to start, run and grow a new business, start asking relevant questions, and plan your business from the ground up.
  3. Do a fantastic job, and people will take notice. Your best value for any advertising is word of mouth from other patients or customers.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Exercise is medicine! Get out there and move! Our bodies want to be in motion. So many illnesses and diseases are preventable (cardiovascular etc.). By improving your lifestyle choices, you can have a dramatic impact on your health. Start from the ground up, and fix things you can control, such as food choices, sleep, and exercise habits. Always set obtainable goals! If you want to run a marathon, you don't start by running 42 km!
