What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mama Hu Hears is a community created to support deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) children and those who love and support them. Target customers are parents of DHH children. It has become a safe space, a community, a wealth of knowledge, and shared lived experiences—online program sales, fun merchandise, etc.

Tell us about yourself

I created my Instagram account, @mama.hu.hears, during my second maternity leave when I found myself missing my patients. After thousands of parents were reaching out to me for support and answers, I knew I had to create something. Something to help support them during their journeys. I created my course so that moms nursing at night could watch and learn so that dads who couldn't understand DHH culture and community could learn and so that extended family members could understand why ENTs, SLPs, Deaf Mentors, and LMFTs were important. It's extended beyond families now to student curriculums and continued professional education. I love what I do - what motivates me is that rural families, those without access to optimal hearing healthcare, could get this information for free. I'm looking at connecting with nonprofits and universities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing a small idea into something bigger than myself. Sure, it's my face on the brand, but it has its own entity now. It's something else that has its own life. I'm just along for the ride.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Self-doubt: Am I doing this right? Am I going down the right path? Will this work? When I go back to my core values - family, authenticity, making a difference, and connection - it really helps me steer the journey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

One step at a time. Keep going. Remember your core values and mission. Stick to it. It'll come.
