Foundation Chiropractic Co. - Dr. Jason Yakimishyn

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jason Yakimishyn, Co-Owner of Foundation Chiropractic Co., located in Oakville, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Foundation Chiropractic Co., we focus on NeuroStructural Correction.
The spine is the foundation of our body, posture, and health. So for a moment, think of the foundation of a building. If the foundation were off, then we would expect the floors to creak, the walls to crack, and the windows would not close properly. We could repair and patch these problems, but we should understand that it would only be a temporary fix. Eventually, these problems will return, and we will be forced to repair them again and again.

In our office, we detect and analyze any structural shifts in the spine. These shifts are the underlying cause of many symptoms (or what we call secondary conditions). By correcting these shifts, we actually correct the cause of many secondary conditions rather than manage them. We understand that our services aren't for everyone, but for anyone looking for long-term relief instead of a quick fix, then we are the place for them. We operate on the principle that everyone was designed to be healthy. We work with people of all ages to not only help them eliminate the pain but also help them prevent future diseases.

Tell us about yourself

As a child, I was sick on a regular basis. I suffered from regular headaches, had bad seasonal allergies, and was routinely on medications for sinus infections. I tried all the conventional treatments, including multiple allergy shots yearly and every sinus medication you can think of, but it didn't matter. I was still the kid that carried Kleenex in his pocket everywhere and constantly coughed and blew up mucous every Spring and Fall. All of that changed for me when I started to see a chiropractor at the age of 18.

He educated me on the importance of proper spinal alignment and the impact it has on my nervous system and overall health. The work he did with me had such a profound impact on my health and the way I view wellness that it changed the course of my life. It was at that moment that I decided to become a chiropractor.

I'm passionate about what I do because I've gone through it myself. I don't think I'll ever get tired of helping others through chiropractic care in the same way it helped me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While I'm very proud to say that I own and operate a successful business that continues to grow and evolve, it's the individual accomplishments we make with our patients that make our jobs so worthwhile. Helping people uncover the cause of their specific health concerns (headaches and back pain are the common ones, but some of the more unique concerns we've helped with include vertigo, deafness, chronic constipation, fertility issues, etc.), and then working with them to allow their body to heal naturally is truly rewarding. Shifting people away from a pain-based view of health and encouraging them to live a more preventative, wellness-based lifestyle is an amazing transformation that I'll never get tired of seeing. I believe that we can transform the health of our community with each person that walks through our doors.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Co-owning and operating a small business with my sister is amazing in most ways, but it also comes with the difficulty of separating my work life from my personal life. I believe all business owners deal with this problem, but it's extra difficult when you work with family. Although it's tough to get through a Sunday family dinner without mentioning work or thinking about some of our office stresses, it's also a blessing to work with someone who you can fully trust and rely on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Walk Your Talk - Lead by example for your team and your patients/customers. If you don't believe in your product or service, then who will?
  2. Set Your Schedule - When you work for yourself, it's easy for your work to consume you. Set limits in your schedule and clearly define what is work time, what is family time, and what is your time for yourself.
  3. Love What You Do - We spend the majority of our time working, so make sure you are doing something you love to do (it's vital for happiness). There is no sense in investing time, money, and resources into something you aren't passionate about simply because you think it may be profitable.
