Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Glenn Losack MD, psychiatrist photographer, photojournalist, and author, based in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a veteran psychiatrist for 43 years, a photographer/photojournalist, a traveler to 50 nations, a singer-songwriter, and the author of 'The Bonds We Share,' a coffee table photo essay book about the commonality of human beings published by Apollo publishers.

Tell us about yourself

In 1991 I decided to travel and photograph the developing world and work as a physician for half of the year. My photographic work focuses mostly on the very poor, those who survive thanks to the generosity of others. My work is mostly photojournalistic, some of it is hard to swallow, but I believe necessary so that my audience sees how the other side lives. I have a part-time psychiatric practice in a rural area of Pennsylvania via telemedicine. Most physicians prefer big cities or suburban practices, so millions are left without psychiatric care. I find it most fulfilling working as a physician as well as a photojournalist, both allowing me to travel worldwide lecturing as a psychiatrist and photographing the world's neediest.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There is no greater feeling than helping people as a physician as well as enlightening and educating my audience about the developing world through my photography. The publication of 'The Bonds We Share,' my photo essay book, is also one of the most important accomplishments in my life.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Showing my photographic work in a way that is palatable because I give such importance and attention to the poorest of the poor. Much of my 35 years of shooting centers around Leprosy, a biblical disease that is never mentioned in the mainstream media.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Facing rejection (everyone will) with a positive attitude and never let that stop you from believing in yourself.
  2. Loving what you're doing and not solely what pleases your audience.
  3. Be passionate about what you want and work hard, even if you have to take a job to help support your passion.
