Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Geeta Yadav, Founder of Skin Science / FACET, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a board-certified dermatologist in Toronto with my own practice, FACET Dermatology. My patients include those seeking medical and general dermatology services (such as treatment of acne and eczema, or skin cancer screening) and those looking for cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, dermal fillers, and energy-based treatments. I pride myself on creating a warm and welcoming environment and taking a clinical approach to all my treatments, always providing effective yet natural-looking results.
Tell us about yourself
My parents are first-generation Indian immigrants, and my father is a surgeon; I have always been passionate about science and caring for others, especially those in underserved communities. While in medical school, I was fascinated by the broad scope of issues that fall within the umbrella of dermatology — any health conditions that appear on the skin qualify! — as well as all the diagnostic possibilities. The specialty of dermatology is highly competitive in Canada and typically, only 25 spots are available. I was fortunate to get placed and train in Toronto. Every day, I'm motivated to provide my patients with the utmost care and help them look and feel like the very best versions of themselves. Not everyone knows how to take care of their skin — I consider it a privilege to help guide my patients on their self-care journeys.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing a thriving medical private practice is no small feat in this day and age. I'm proud of the roster of clients that I've built and how I've grown my practice over the years by staying on the cutting edge of dermatological advancements. I'm also excited to share that a business venture that I've been working on for years is debuting soon — stay tuned!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
While it's true that doing what you love doesn't really feel like work, it's also true that you put a great deal of your time and effort into a business. Finding a balance between your work life and your personal life can be challenging — it's easy for it all to blend together.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You need support, both at home and at work, to bring your best self every day.
Know your strengths and weaknesses — and then hire people whose strengths are your weaknesses. Having a team that you can trust to handle those aspects of your business will allow you to channel your energy productively. Don't be afraid to learn new things. For example, millennials and Gen Z have grown up with social media, so it's second nature to them — but learning about TikTok was totally new to me! While it was intimidating at first, I knew learning about this aspect of marketing was critical to growing my business. While I'm not a TikTok master yet, I've learned a lot — and I'm having a lot of fun!
