What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have two businesses that are related. The first is my clinic, The Neck and Back pain Institute where we treat a variety of spinal issues and conditions using state-of-the-art equipment. The second company, Big Rehab Corp., distributes the Antalgic-Trak Articulating Spinal Decompression System, of which I am the inventor. Spinal Decompression is an advanced form of mechanical traction that improves spine and disc function while reducing pain.

The practice treats patients suffering from a variety of neck and back pain conditions and injuries. Many injured patients require spinal decompression to eliminate their pain and restore function. Patients feel comfortable, confident, and special that they are being treated by the doctor who invented decompression. It is also extremely unique that a patient would receive treatment from the actual doctor-inventor of this unique FDA-cleared medical device.

Big Rehab Corp is the worldwide distributor of the Antalgic-Trak. Today there are hundreds of Antalgic-Trak devices being used by hospitals and clinics around the world, including the USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Kuwait, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Abu Dhabi.

Tell us about yourself

I became a doctor in 1978 and added Acupuncture physician in 1994. After treating thousands of patients with spine-related issues, I knew there needed to be an improved method to treat spinal compression syndromes and disc injuries. That was in 2000. It was then that I began to build a prototype in my Long Island basement. After several years of prototyping, I submitted documentation to the FDA in 2005. I received the FDA Clearance in the same year. We began selling Antalgic-Traks in 2006 and have continued to expand ever since. It is an amazing feeling of satisfaction to see patients experience relief after using the Antalgic-Trak.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

From the practice standpoint, my biggest accomplishment is being able to achieve relief for patients who otherwise had no hope of improvement. From the Big Rehab standpoint, receiving accolades and thanks from doctors around the world is extremely inspiring.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having two businesses that are related yet require completely different modes of operations with completely different regulatory requirement, can be overwhelming. Each is a full-time job. It remains vital to hire the necessary professionals who can help keep the functionality and compliance in order.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have knowledge about the business field you desire to open.
  2. Make sure you have the appropriate funding, which includes running the business without sales for at least a 6-month period.
  3. Take the time to create a business plan and team. Find the proper professionals who can assist you in your project, i.e., an accountant and attorney. Maybe an individual who already operates a similar business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As a final thought, it is difficult to determine the timeline of success. Make sure you have the emotional willpower to ride the project through to completion, NO MATTER WHAT. If you don't have that kind of "stick to it" nature... don't start.
