Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adrienne Chan, Founder of Dr. Adrienne Chan, located in Vancouver, BC, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and a Registered Acupuncturist. I help people who are looking for a more natural and less invasive way to alleviate their health issues that they are not able to resolve with Western Medicine alone. I "get to the point" and the root cause of their ailments to resolve their discomforts. I also attract clients who want more balance in their life and provide a safe space for relaxation, healing, and mental well-being.

Tell us about yourself

I've always known I wanted to be a healer in alternative medicine. I am also a modern mother of two girls, and taking care of people is deeply satisfying to me. My interest in Chinese Medicine grew naturally out of my own healing journey. During my adolescence, I had my first encounter with a Chinese Medicine Doctor who corrected my health problems while providing me with first-hand exposure to the benefits of Herbal Medicine. Since then, I have been fascinated with the Ancient Healing Arts. Today I enjoy helping with and have had clinical success in a variety of conditions, including pain management, fatigue, insomnia, acne, fertility and pregnancy, stress and anxiety, depression, bloating and indigestion, hay fever, and weight loss. Being part of my patient's healing journey is an honour. Seeing them get better is very rewarding, and experiencing the connection we've built along the way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments are the health of my community. It's great to see younger and younger people very open-minded, wanting to take preventative measures and adopt healthier habits to maintain long-term health.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I enjoy the freedom of being self-employed and making my own schedule to balance motherhood. What is challenging is you don't get a steady paycheck, and some months are going to be slower. There are also all the details you have to figure out on your own and juggle, like replying to emails, bookings, payments, laundry, cleaning, website, social media, referrals, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be a first-rate of yourself and not a second-rate version of somebody else. Focus on your strengths and what you are good at; you'll naturally find your niche and attract the clients you want.
  2. Take care of yourself. Take care of your health, set limits, and have time to relax. When you put yourself first and are feeling well, you'll be able to take care of others better.
  3. Be interested in your clients as people. They like to be heard. Business thrives on genuine connections and trust.
