Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dov Sims, Owner of Cali Alley and CEO of California Rose, located in Berkeley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

California Rose Catering is my events catering company. We specialize in full-production events that include weddings and corporate functions. Private events are also a common option for our clients.

Cali Alley is our sister restaurant. Coined as the East Bay's only artisan pick-up window, we specialize in fresh comfort foods. We are a neighborhood favorite.

Tell us about yourself

Creation motivates me. I cherish the feeling of freedom, with the idea that you can create and experiment with what you desire. Growing up around food and a mother that cooked with great passion and integrity was something I gravitated toward at a young age. I knew I could cook; however, having the ability to add something different to each dish, something that people want but seldomly receive, a feeling, a flavor, a reaction that is organic and happy that can transcend the moment from being regular to outstanding. The expectation that my clients have from me represents a fulfilling challenge on my end to not only keep the bar set high but often go above and beyond. Creation is the starting point and ending point of my success. Remaining inspired creates the motivation to confidentially stay outside the box and push the envelope on ideas that I think might work. From menu items to marketing campaigns, the idea that I will be successful on all fronts is a dream. I must fail at some ideas, as these failures only plant the seed for the successful road ahead.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been in business for 20 years. I have a tremendous staff and a new restaurant that saved the entire operation when COVID hit. My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is developing a culture of success within the walls of my company.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, you are consistently on call. The hardest thing would be not overthinking what could go wrong. Taking time away and allowing yourself to separate from the company can be a challenge, but it is something needed when dealing with so much on a daily basis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take risks. Do not be afraid of failing.
  2. Be sound in your decisions with the humility to change things. Integrity is sometimes everything.
  3. Do it because you love it. Passion will inspire success.
