Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Douglas Morris, Owner of Arizona Chiropractic & Holistic Health Center, LLC., located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Doctor of Chiropractic. I have a multi-disciplinary clinic that has a physician assistant, a chiropractor (myself), and some massage therapists.
Tell us about yourself
Right out of chiropractic college, I worked for other chiropractors as an associate. I quickly hit the "ceiling" as an associate doctor and wasn't happy with how other clinics were treating their patients or staff. I knew I could do more, provide better care, get patients better quicker and be honest and upfront about everything with the patient.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing into a multi-disciplinary clinic. I had a dream and an idea in my head. I worked very hard to get to that goal.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Jumping into all of it and managing it. Being a business owner has its perks; however, they do come at a cost. I'd say when I first started, I worked twice as hard for the same amount of money. That eventually gets better, but it does take time. There are also a lot of "behind-the-scenes" jobs/tasks that come with owning a business. For example, I have had to disassemble a hydraulic massage table, find out what's wrong, and order a part. Another example would be I replaced a sink, managing staff, hiring, firing, and training staff.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take care of your staff, THEY drive the business. Happy staff = happy customers. If you treat your staff badly—no matter how much you pay them, they will leave, but the flipside is also true, if you treat your staff very well, they will stay with you and they won't want to leave. My secret weapon is to care about them (really and truly care) and take such good care of my staff (pay is not everything) that they cannot find anything better.
- Go above and beyond for your clients. Exceed their expectations (this means more work on your end!)
- Lead by example. Be the first one there and the last to leave, do not be "above" any job. Take out the trash, clean the toilet, etc. A leader is not a dictator; a leader is "in the trenches" with their staff side by side with them.
