Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dorothy Kuhrt, Founder of Dees Desserts, located in Union, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make custom cakes, treats, desserts, and favors for any occasion or just because!

Tell us about yourself

I went to college for business, and after graduation, I couldn’t decide what to do next. I thought a bakery might be cool, so I went to culinary school and never looked back! Working for myself is my biggest motivation to succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just building something from nothing and seeing how I’ve progressed over the years in both skill and business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Having to do SO MUCH of the work yourself. I wear way too many hats most days, and it’s hard to rely on anyone because no one will have the same care and dedication as I do!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn everything you can first. I learned along the way, but I wish I had known more before I started!
  2. Have a plan. Winging it is definitely not the smartest way to go. Don’t ask how I know.
  3. Be passionate. If you don’t really love what you do, you won’t want to do it. Owning a business is hard work, and it’s really up to you to succeed.
