Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dorothy Johnson, founder of Breakup Coach Dorothy, LLC, located in Gulf Breeze, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help people get over their ex in 3 months or less. We are the creators of epic comebacks after tragic heartbreak. Our customers are BRAVEhearts who choose to be brave by gifting themselves a different kind of heart-healing experience. They are brave enough to believe that they will build a bigger and better life than the one they had with their ex.

Tell us about yourself

I experienced a heartbreaking breakup in 2016 that forever changed my life. I spent a year doing all the wrong things, doing everything I could to figure out how to get over my ex. I googled and did everything google had to offer, only to find myself a year later still mired with anger and resentment about my partner ending things after seven years and moving on in a matter of days. Six months later, I found the key to healing heartbreak, and ever since then made it my mission to teach anyone and everyone who experiences a breakup how to truly get over and build a life bigger and better than the one they had with their ex so that no one would have to spend a year or more "getting over their ex." I'm grateful for what I do and can't image doing anything else. I've created, honed, and tested a proven process that has helped hundreds of Bravehearts get over their ex in 3 months or less.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having created a proven process that helps so many individuals get over their ex. Anyone can go through this process and be over their ex in 3 months or less. It's the biggest gift I've been able to give in my lifetime. Secondly, the How to Get Over Your Ex podcast. I love being able to create and share the resources I so desperately needed and wanted when I was going through the thick of heartbreak. The best part is that it's free!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, negative feedback. My work is so near and dear to my heart. I really put my all into what I do, so when I have negative reviews on the podcast, it's hard not to take them to heart. But I know that the people who are listening are hurt, they are really struggling, and so I take it all with a grain of salt and hope they find the answers they are looking for.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be so committed to building your business that you'd deliver pizzas to fund it. In the beginning, I was offering breakup advice for free on the street. I would have done anything to fund my business and be able to coach individuals through it. I expected nothing of my business and everything of me.
  2. Test, test, test, try anything and everything you think of. You never know what's gonna work.
  3. Be the best. Learn, grow, and get as much experience as you can. My business doesn't do well because I'm good at sales and marketing. It does well because I'm the best at what I do. I only keep getting better when it comes to coaching this niche. I will continue to educate myself, gain experience, and work on being the best in the business.
