Passion for Beer! - Dog House Brewing Company
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard McNish, owner of Dog House Brewing Company, located in Petawawa, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a father-son, veteran-operated brewery. Petawawa is our home, sharing its history and our beer is our passion!
Tell us about yourself
My son Brady had cultured the brewing hobby between us. We would experiment in the basement making beer and seeing how we did. That hobby turned into a business idea with the help of his consistent poking. Now we have a sustainable company that we both work hard at growing. The process of creating a new product and seeing it end up on the shelf is extremely satisfying.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The close relationship we have created between us and our customers is truly amazing. The support of the community is rewarding.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Starting a business is like having a new puppy. It needs your attention and dedication every day to help it grow and learn. You need to work hard on finding a work-life balance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Research, research, research… you can never spend too much effort or time on doing your homework for your idea. Utilize every resource available to you. DON’T be afraid to ask for help.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Have fun with it, try hard to have it remain fun and enjoyable.
