What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help people who are looking to be business owners complete all the steps needed to have a fully operational business ready to accept clients and make money. Many have a dream of business ownership but simply don't know where to get started.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a small business owner myself 12 years ago. I successfully opened and operated Degrees of Success, which is a student loan management company. After being a successful business owner with a freedom many only dreams of, I decided I wanted to help others also to achieve that dream. I am motivated each day by knowing my clients are one step closer to the lives they always wanted.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Many believe the most important thing about running a business is the money, but for me, it comes down to two things: 1) Freedom and 2) Connection. I have met and connected with wonderful people both in business settings and throughout my travels around the world. Also, having the freedom to decide when I will do something and how I will do it and where I will do it is the best part of my life and my accomplishments. The freedom to live my life on my terms may seem so basic, but it's a freedom many never experience, and I'm grateful daily. Finally, being able to help others to achieve what I have achieved truly has fulfilled my life!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

To be comfortable with being uncomfortable is vital as a business owner, yet it can be hard at times to roll with the punches and to continue to be optimistic even when times are tough. As business owners, we just do it anyway. We also must wear many hats as owners and learn how to do things we may not necessarily be comfortable or good at doing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are three key steps you must take when starting a business:

1. Hire an expert to consult with to avoid errors and pitfalls. Consultants have already been where you are, so use them to help you be successful faster.
2. Slow and steady wins the race. Take your time, and don't worry if you are only taking baby steps. Just keep moving forward. It's much better than giving up.
3. You will often fail, so the sooner you start failing, the better. Fail early so you can learn from your mistakes, fix them, and build a business that will last.
