A Lifestyle of Ease and Fullness - Divinely Crafted
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kacy-Ann Gable, Owner of Divinely Crafted, located in Edgewood, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Divinely Crafted is an all-natural, non-toxic hair and body care company. My customers mostly consist of black and brown women who prioritize their beauty routines and self-care.
Tell us about yourself
I originally started my hair and body care business, Divinely Crafted, out of necessity and a little curiosity. I entered undergrad in 2008 and stopped chemically straightening my hair. But as a broke college student, I could no longer afford to go to a salon or even purchase the most quality 'natural hair' brands. So, I decided to make my own. I used online research and intuition to formulate what I now call "Hair & Body Butter." Creating my Hair & Body Butter sparked something inside of me that wasn't there before because it allowed me space to be creative and curious. I enjoyed the learning process, experimentation process, and sharing my creations with close family and friends. Over the years, seeing how my products have helped improve people's lives and make them feel more beautiful has been the fuel to maintain my passion.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been leaving my full-time job to pursue Divinely Crafted full-time. I left my full-time job in healthcare management in June 2022. I made the decision to leave about one year prior to that date. From June 2021 to June 2022, I created a personal savings goal and paid off some debts in order to put myself in a position to focus on building and expanding my business. I realized that I was unable to commit to 50 hours/week at a job that was no longer aligned with my long-term vision, so I decided to put that time and energy into structuring and expanding my own business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Finding daily motivation and creating structure! As someone who worked a traditional 9-5 office job for 11 years before working for myself, I underestimated how difficult such a transition would be. I am almost one year into being a full-time entrepreneur, and I am still learning how to balance and allocate my time in the most efficient way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Keep good records from the very beginning! Get a business checking account immediately, account for every dollar used towards your business, prepare for taxes as soon as possible, etc.
- Get a mentor, if possible. If you can't find a traditional mentor, don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for help or advice from someone more seasoned than you.
- JUST START! There will always be a reason not to start your business. But if you love what you do and believe in what you have to offer, just start...the "how" figures itself out.
