Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Sonya Jensen, Owner of Divine Elements Health Centre, located in Surrey, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Naturopathic Doctor, and my husband and I have been operating our business, Divine Elements Naturopathic Clinic, since 2009 in Kitsilano. We have been serving the community through education and working with families to help them reclaim their health. My work is primarily with women, empowering them to see their self-worth and reclaim their health by learning about their hormones and how they can support them to feel and look better.

Tell us about yourself

What motivates me every day are my children. Knowing that if I support women, I support every human's first relationship. By creating space for women to understand themselves better and become healthier, they can then support their families from a source of energy rather than depletion. My own story with my health, my traumas, and my desire to help others got me into this profession, and I am so thankful to be doing work in the world that is a direct reflection of how I live my life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is the community we continue to create and the ripple effect of health we see in the families.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part as a small business owner is the lack of support from the government. Also, in a small business, you have to wear many hats, and as a mother as well, that has been my biggest challenge. I didn't get maternity leave, sick days, or vacation pay to spend time with my children. I have to work at all of that myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you love to do. You will have to constantly pivot, so if you love your work, the work will pull you to keep going.
  2. Delegate work to others, don't get stuck doing something you think you are supposed to, to save money; you lose so much more doing that.
  3. Self-care. You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your business.
