What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide high-end but affordable dietary supplements to health enthusiasts and people who want sustainable weight loss. Our customers are men and women between the ages of 35-65 for the most part.
Tell us about yourself
I am an entrepreneur at heart. I started my first business in 1993, and since then have bought and sold businesses. However, when I started Dirobi in 2009, I knew I had really found my calling. I love the health and fitness industry! I enjoy finding clinical studies and the latest in fitness, for example, and sharing them with our customers and social media followers. I also love the Dirobi Health Show podcast, which has well over 200 episodes now with world-class experts in various areas of fitness, nutrition, and supplementation.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Entrepreneurship is tough, and I have had my failures. However, my biggest accomplishment is that in my career, I have built multiple businesses that have succeeded for 8-13 years; I think that's an accomplishment in itself!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Juggling so many moving parts. There is SO MUCH that can be done, but as an entrepreneur, half of the battle is knowing what to do, what not to do, what to do more of, and what to do less of. I would say time and resource management is the key.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a solid plan and use it to get about twice as much money as you think you need.
- Don't wear all the hats for very long. Get people who are better than you at the core, mission-critical tasks, and get them going early.
- Make sure you aren't blinded by the shiny object syndrome of your product. Is it REALLY world-class? Will people still be buying it from you in 5, 10, or 20 years?
