Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dipti Salopek, Founder of Spark Executive Coaching, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an executive coach and frequently work with CEOs, founders, and entrepreneurs in the growth stage and late-stage venture or PE-backed companies.

Tell us about yourself

As an HR executive, a part of my role has always involved coaching leaders through various goals, challenges, and hurdles they've been working on. It's something I'm deeply passionate about. The opportunity to build this into my practice is incredible, and I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity. There is nothing comparable to the moment when I'm speaking with a client, and I see a perceptible shift in their energy - a lightbulb of creativity goes on, a weight lifts off their shoulders, and a moment of clarity suddenly clears the clutter in their minds. It's very fulfilling personally to be a part of each of their journeys and walk side by side with them through these moments.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I can use my skills to help those that I care deeply about, even when not my clients. I spoke with a friend just earlier today who has been looking for a job for the last several months. As a result of the lack of traction she was experiencing, she started perceiving a low sense of self-worth. Being able to shift the narrative in her own mind, to help her get outside of her own head and see herself in the way that I and others could see her, to watch her energy lift and her confidence build, was just incredibly rewarding. My accomplishments may each seem small, but they mean the world to each person involved.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things, but also the most rewarding, is always to be thinking ahead. Where will my next clients come from? How do I meet and build an ever-growing network of people around me? How can I be more deeply of service to my current clients?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It can be a slow build, so set yourself up with the buffer of a runway that allows you the grace and patience to build your craft and build it well.
  2. Always ask yourself what MORE you can do for your clients.
  3. You don't have to be alone. Have and build a strong support system and network around you; they'll always surprise you with their willingness to help and be there for you in ways you wouldn't even imagine.
