Your Success Story Starts Here - Digital Position
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roger Parent, founder, and CEO of Digital Position, located in Simsbury, CT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We're a full-service PPC & SEO agency for ambitious brands looking to scale. We typically work with e-commerce and healthy & active lifestyle brands ranging from $1mm - $500mm.
Tell us about yourself
I used to work for a custom apparel company prior to starting Digital Position. I transitioned a large PPC account in-house and added $1mm in profit in my first year of managing it. When I asked for growth, it was a very small raise. Thus, I decided I wouldn't be valued and went out on my own to start Digital Position. My team is what motivates me every day because we have such great people all throughout the company.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say our Glassdoor reviews. I wanted to create a culture that was different than the toxic culture at the other companies I had worked for and what I see so widespread across the industry. I'm just proud of the level of fulfillment my team feels working at Digital Position.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Making tough choices for certain people. Sometimes what the employee wants doesn't make sense for the business, and you have to make tough calls like taking really good care of that person but helping them transition into another career. That can be very hard to wield that sort of "power" because it's uncomfortable to change people's lives in what can feel like a negative way - but I've found as long as you pour excessive amounts of honey on the vinegar and do right by everyone than most of the time they'll understand.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Move fast, and don't strive for perfection. Progress over perfection. You learn more by doing.
- Stay humble. Sometimes it can be harder to handle success than failure.
- Allow the people you've hired to make their own mistakes and learn like you're going to as you learn. Don't micromanage, no matter what. It NEVER works well.
