Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Thomas Dowling, owner of DIG Hospitality, located in Charleston, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
DIG Hospitality is a locally owned and operated restaurant company. We are a chef-driven casual dining sports pub concept with a focus on hospitality. DIG Hospitality has grown to three locations in the Charleston market since our first location opened on Daniel Island in 2008.
Tell us about yourself
I have worked in the food and beverage industry my entire life, supporting myself through school, and realized that the hospitality industry is my passion. Working in food and beverage is challenging at times, but I feel blessed to be able to do what I love every day. Having the ability to provide hospitality, fresh food, and great service to our guests motivates me every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishments are the relationships I have built with guests and employees through the years. The friendships and business relationships with managers and employees have allowed us to accomplish our goals professionally and personally throughout the years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The most difficult challenges are the ones that are unexpected, and you have no control over. The last two years dealing with the COVID crisis has certainly been a test for the hospitality industry. Thankfully, we have long-term, hardworking, dedicated, and loyal employees who have helped us overcome some obstacles.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You need to have a very strong passion, commitment, and dedication to your business. Build relationships with your employees and vendors. Provide hospitality not only to your guests but, most importantly, provide hospitality to your employees. They play a key role in the business reaching its goals and making the business a success.
