What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run Dietitian Directory. It's just like it sounds like a directory of Dietitians in North America. My customers are Dietitians who purchase membership fees to be on my site. Their customers are members of the general public looking for a Dietitian.
Tell us about yourself
I have worked as a clinical dietitian in the public system for about 15 years. The idea got started at a backyard garden party. When I realized I had no idea about the dietitians in private practice in my community, despite how talented they were. I thought that it would make so much sense for all these dietitians in private practice to be listed in the same space.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is hearing about the results my clients have received with membership to my website. I charge $29.99/month, and some clients have received over $10,000 in revenue/year (that's a 28-fold return on investment). My clients have let me know this has opened up career opportunities they may have never imagined for themselves before.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
That upfront investment is required. I'm in my first year of business, I haven't made back my initial investment in the company, and it might take a few more years to make back my investment.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
