Part-Time Product Academy - Diego Granados

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Diego Granados, Founder of Part-Time Product Academy, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a business around creating content, coaching services, and self-paced courses for current and Aspiring Product Managers who are looking to understand: what is Product Management? How do I excel at being one? How can I get a job in Product Management?

Tell us about yourself

I'm from Mexico, but I've lived in the U.S. for over 7 years. I have been a Product Manager in the Tech industry at companies like Microsoft, LinkedIn, and PayPal. In 2021, when people lost their jobs because of COVID, I joined an organization to help Product Managers with their resume and interview preparation. The last presentation I did was for a group of students who couldn't find jobs (because of how the market was affected by COVID). After that presentation, their questions flooded my inbox. Knowing that I couldn't scale answering every single individual question, I decided to take them and create a YouTube video to answer them. This quickly expanded from YouTube into LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and a Newsletter - grouping > 150K followers. Knowing that through my content, I'm helping people follow their passion to land a job in Tech is the fuel that keeps me going every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I've been able to help thousands of people around the world to find a job in something they are passionate about, start creating content and help from a community that helps each other every day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There's not enough time to do everything you want. I work a full-time job and run my own business on the side. Prioritizing everything is essential to running your own business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on marketing much more than perfecting your product or service. Someone with a product or service that may not be as great as yours will "win" if they have better marketing.
  2. Listen to your customers all the time. Don't build something that YOU think will be useful. Spend as much time as you can listening to your customers.
  3. Iterate fast and learn. Don't wait until your product "is ready." Deploy your service/product as fast as you can and then iterate with feedback.
