What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a photographer that focuses on food and people. The food side of my business is about helping brands connect to their audience and showcase their food. My goal is to help highlight what they create for their customer base and make them eager to run out and grab a bite.
The people side of my business is about meeting people where they are and empowering them to feel their best within the LGBTQI+ Community. One of the best things is watching someone feel good in their skin and capturing that joy. Although food and people are vastly different things to capture - the bigger theme is building connections with those we buy from and honoring ourselves as we navigate the world. My work helps brands connect with their audiences with meaningful content.
Tell us about yourself
I am a former pastry chef, and I connect with humans through food. Photography allows me the best of both worlds. I have the opportunity to create art, give back, and help others. I am motivated by food businesses and humans who want to shine and stand out. It gives me great pride to see my art and build a community with like-minded humans wanting better for the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have worked several times with a local business, and I recently finished a project that will be used as a sandwich board sign. I nailed my vision and created something that will help draw people into her shop. It was a culmination of all I have been working towards over the last two years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Talking money and pricing. I don't care where you are in your business. Figuring out what to charge can be such a pain. You want to make enough to thrive, but also make sure your client feels like they are getting the value. It is still a struggle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Educate yourself and research. You don't have to have everything locked down to start, but do have some information as a starting point.
- Don't compare your day 1 to someone else's day 375. This will not help you grow but keep you stuck.
- Practice, practice, practice, and put yourself out there. You will never know if something is possible unless you try and gather data.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If you have a business idea and want to test the waters, but there are so many others doing what you want, you worry you won't be good enough. Here is what I like to remember - do you think Taylor Swift ever thought, well, there are enough singer/songwriters they don't need me. Hell no - she went out and made her dream a reality. Perhaps your journey will be bumpy, and you'll take lots of turns, but your path will lead you to find amazing things. Don't give up!
