Be Exceptional and Multiply Your Impact - Devi McFadden

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Devi McFadden, Founder and CEO of Kathy Devi McFadden LLC, located in Scotts Valley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach, guide, and work with leaders and their teams to achieve next-level performance. I specialize in supporting clients that are being asked to produce outstanding results.

Tell us about yourself

After many years as an HR Business Partner, I realized the part I enjoyed most was coaching. Working with teams to identify their unique talents and develop strategies to address challenges resulted in individual and collective growth as well as exceeding expected business results. I'm passionate about working with leaders who are ready to do the work to develop themselves and their teams.

I have also been there -- leading global teams and driving transformation. So, I understand the complexities and challenges faced by leaders. It's important to have people around you who will challenge, stretch, and support you. That's what we coaches do. That's what I love to do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have a list in my notebook that reminds me of what's essential to be successful in my line of work. Live the life, master the model, trust the client and the process, work with a mentor, and establish healthy boundaries. My biggest accomplishment is getting to a place in my life where I can do these things and sustain them. They are all essential, and they all work together. When these are in place, everything else just works.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is being a 'solo'-preneur. It's very different from being part of a team or organization. So it's even more important to create and nurture a community that will challenge, stretch, and support me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prioritize self-care. You have a responsibility to your customers, your team, and yourself. Burning yourself out won't help anyone. So, take care of yourself. That doesn't mean cutting corners or slowing down. It means being disciplined and setting realistic expectations.
  2. Follow your passion. What's that saying? "Choose A Job You Love, And You Will Never Work Day Your Life."--Confucious. That's it. Go for that.
  3. Have a plan. Figure out what you need, how you'll get it or do it, and by when. The plan will change, and it may take longer than you expect. That's ok. Periodically look back at what you've accomplished. There will be plenty to celebrate.
