Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Devon Watson, owner of Dev the Yogi, located in Tacoma, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a yoga educator, teacher, and trainer that works with both students and teachers of yoga from all walks of life! Through classes, workshops, and immersive retreat/training experiences, I am able to support each unique person on their journey to inner healing and self-actualization.

Tell us about yourself

I have been deeply introspective, questioning, and curious from a young age. My passion for philosophy, spirituality, and personal enlightenment over the years naturally led me to the path of yoga when I was seventeen years old. In 2015 I was in college studying art and world religions when I knew it was time to leave it all behind to follow my heart calling and become a yoga teacher. I continue to teach both locally and internationally, connecting and sharing the magic of yoga with students from all over the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a yoga educator has been witnessing the transformation and healing of my students over the years! Having a front-row seat to the deep healing and embrace of one's highest self that comes with devoted yoga practice is a true honor. I am grateful for my students every moment of every day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning how to navigate the world of business with confidence and clarity, especially around my boundaries. I was only twenty years old when I went into business and learned many hard lessons. Early on, I would say yes to any and everything that was asked of me, often doing unpaid work, allowing myself to stay in abusive work environments far too long, and making excuses for unacceptable business practices. Especially in the yoga world, inappropriate business practices run rampant. Through much trial and error, I am now proud to say I hold strong to my personal boundaries of what is and is not right for myself, my business, and my community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My biggest tip is just START! The hardest part is the first step. After that, everything will begin to come into alignment and figure itself out.

Second, you are YOU, and that is your superpower. Don't waste your time trying to be like another brand, business, or teacher. Be YOU. All of you, unedited and full force. That is what will make your business not only stand out but it will also keep you grounded.

Last but not least, embrace collaboration over competition. It's easy to get caught up in the competitiveness of business, but when you have purpose-driven work as I do, it can be so fruitful and also incredibly enjoyable to team up and work together with other like-minded businesses and companies. We go farther together and have so much to gain through community and teamwork!
