Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sherri Phillips, Co-Owner and COO of Deutsch Photography, Inc., located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Deutsch Photography serves businesses, non-profits, and individuals by capturing images that convey the essence of their unique brands and services.

Tell us about yourself

Fifteen years ago, my life partner and I ditched our careers in law and advertising to backpack around the world for a year. We brought back amazing memories in the form of photos, and we knew that's what we wanted to keep on doing for others and for ourselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Happy clients. Though we had no prior professional experience in the field, we worked hard to give them images that were as unique as they are. Today we have a thriving business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Lack of predictability. For instance, Covid. Need I say more?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you're good at and put your energy there. Try to delegate the rest.
  2. Approach your business with a service attitude. Your customers will reward you.
  3. Treat every failure as an opportunity to grow.
