Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Seth Potter, Founder of Dental Design Services, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dental Design Services provides CAD designs of dental Prostheses for Dental Laboratories and Dental offices. Digital Dentistry is growing at a rapid pace. New technology and materials are getting released all the time. Dental Design Services receives 3d intra-oral scans of a patient's mouth and provides a digital design of the required dental prosthesis.

Tell us about yourself

I am a trained and registered Dental Technologist. I worked at a Dental Laboratory in Edmonton, Canada, for 5 years and trained under two talented technicians. I have always been passionate about technology, both within the dental field and outside of it. Bringing the passions of travel, exploration, a love for technology, and the dental industry inspired the creation of Dental Design Services. Due to the business being fully digital, I am able to live as a digital nomad while operating and building the business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

  1. Creating a location-independent business that allows me to work from anywhere in the world with an internet connection in an industry that usually doesn't allow that.
  2. Building a business to a point to make larger corporate partnerships.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Most of the challenges I have noticed are all mental and mindset based. Any issues I face in the business are usually minor and easily solved. The challenges that are harder to overcome are things such as fear of failure, disappointment, or discouragement. There are lots of highs and lows while running a business, sometimes on a daily basis. Having the mental strength to overcome and push through those times is the hardest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't let fear limit your mindset or potential. Fear is the biggest limiter to growth. If you can beat fear, then the sky is the limit to what you can accomplish.
  2. Be prepared for hard days of disappointment and discouragement. That is normal. Stay consistent and keep pushing forward.
  3. Charge what you are worth. Don't undercut your worth with the hope to get more clients. Respect your value, and others will as well. The clients you get when you do that will be higher quality as well.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Anyone who wants to start a business should just do it! Start and see where it goes. Don't be afraid of failure!
