Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise Grant, Owner of Denise Grant Photography, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a commercial photography studio in Toronto. My primary client base consists of actors, musicians, realtors, artists, and lawyers.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in the 50s and 60s when education was not considered as essential as today. I dropped out of grade 11, and by the time I was 21, I'd held 23 jobs. That decided me that I had to learn a skill, and little did I know, it became a passion and one I will pursue forever.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being in business for 47 years with no training still amazes me, but my biggest accomplishment is that most of my clients come back again and again. I form very personal bonds with people. It's dealing with all facets of society and all types of personalities that enthrall me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am hopeless with paperwork, so my poor husband deals with that. Numbers defeat me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The 40-hour week is a myth. You will be working all hours you can, and it's never the same from one week to the next.
  2. Be prepared to make sacrifices and compromises in your personal life, and make sure your family understands that you are juggling.
  3. If you deal poorly with stress, don't start a business. It becomes more manageable the longer you work, but stress can cause physical breakdown and you have to make sure you're watching your health.
