What's your business, and who are your customers?
Delightfully Quilted is an online quilt boutique launched in December 2021. It offers bold, colorful, handmade quilts. My dream customer is someone who loves quilts and appreciates high-quality, handmade items.
Tell us about yourself
I am a homeschooling mom of 5. I started Delightfully Quilted as a creative outlet as a way to express my gifts of quilting and entrepreneurship that weren't being utilized as a stay-at-home mom. I love creating art that brings joy and tranquility to a room. It lights me up that my work is a source of joy for people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be the actual launching of the business. It was a really big deal for me to even get to that place. It took two years (2020-2021) of planning, creating, and making quilts, as well as having a 5th baby, homeschooling, and moving from WA to VA, all the while there was a pandemic. It was truly the biggest accomplishment of my life, and I am so proud of myself for doing the hard work needed to pursue my dream.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being able to use my time wisely in both homeschooling/mom life and the business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't go too big with the inventory. Start small so that you can understand what actually sells, not what you think will sell. It is better to sell out than not have any demand.
- Don't spend all the money before setting some aside for advertising. It can be really hard to get the right customers without targeted ads, at least with an art business.
- Rest. Schedule it in. If you don't, burnout will happen, and you will lose more time to mental, emotional, and physical sickness. Being healthy is so important to put out your best work, so take care of yourself to be able to pour into others.
