Wardrobe Stylist With a Passion for Slow Fashion - Delee Cox

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Delee Cox, owner of The Stylist Next Door, located in Herriman, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a wardrobe stylist with a passion for slow fashion. Most women have a closet full of clothes but still feel like they have nothing to wear. It is estimated that most women wear 10-20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. I go into my client's closets and help them define their personal style, create new outfits, and add in pieces mindfully. I find there is nothing more valuable than having a personal stylist come into your closet and see the clothes on your body. I love helping women find confidence in their clothes!

Tell us about yourself

Years ago, I found myself with a closet full of clothes but constantly shopping for something new. I was rarely excited about my wardrobe and frequently purged and donated clothing that had barely been worn. I then found an influencer on YouTube who talked about slow fashion. I dug deeper and realized I was majorly contributing to the mass production of cheap clothing. I became aware that my shopping habits were harming our planet and contributing to modern-day slave labor. After a few years of curating my own wardrobe, I decided to start a business helping other women do the same. Honestly, I wasn't even sure if there was a market for it, but now I can say I have clients all over the country! My clients and the amazing women I get to meet are what keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That's a good question! I don't know if I can pick just one accomplishment. I believe my success has come from many, many small wins and a lot of consistency. I had several amazing clients take a chance on me at the beginning, and I will forever be grateful to them. I think I am most proud of the community I have built. If I can just inspire one woman not to buy another polyester blouse that she won't actually wear, I've done my job. Also, my interview with Stacy London and meeting Tan France in person were definitely highlights.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is staying the course during the slow times. Every business has slow seasons. And they can make you wonder if what you are doing is worth it. But, learn to rest, not quit. Use your slow times to brainstorm new ideas and get your systems in order. And remember, things will always pick up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait until you're ready. Start now. Start for free if you have to. That's what I did. And I learned a lot along the way.
  2. Hire a great business coach or join a marketing group. Getting support is invaluable as a solo entrepreneur.
  3. Follow your passion and find your "WHY." Even if there are thousands of others who do what you do, there is still room for you. If you are passionate about something, your experience, and talents are needed.
