What's your business, and who are your customers?

DEEPER Women Lead Global is a platform established to empower women worldwide to effectively lead in business and in their own lives so that they may effectively grow, develop, and lead others.

Tell us about yourself

At the height of my career, with my eyes set on the next logical step in leadership, settling into a new phase of a growing family, life happened…right in the middle of my leadership! In a period of six months, I got a divorce, accepted a reassignment from one leadership position to another at work, bought a house, sold a house, sent a child off to college, and started a life and leadership coaching business to help women in leadership transition through life-changing events. …All of this in the middle of experiencing the roller coaster ride of my own healing process and fastening the seat belts of my two daughters as they navigated their new reality. Nobody could help me. I trusted no one to give me the grace that I needed should my performance fall below the level of excellence to which I had become accustomed. So I suffered in silence…I powered through.

This is not just my story. This is the story of many women in leadership. Instead of having a place to process our personal problems, we stuff them; we put on our Ruby Woo lipstick, our finest suits, and stylish heels, paint a smile on our faces…and we walk—confidently insecure—bound by the expectations of others, paralyzed by self-judgment, and completely afraid to give any indication that we're not OK.

This…is my why! This is why I speak! This is why I became vigilant about helping women like me transition through life-changing events while managing the demands of their roles as leaders, promoting self-leadership as the foundation for leading others. This is why I wrote the books "It's Always DEEPER" and "Leading the DEEPER Way"…why I hosted the DEEPER Women Speak® —an event that provides a platform for women in leadership to share their stories and to empower other women to go after their healing while leading to go after their dreams, to lead the DEEPER Life®, and become DEEPER Women®! I am Dr. Barbara Swinney, leader of more than 20 years, a John Maxwell Certified Life and Holistic Leadership Coach, Speaker, and Author, using my gifts to inspire transformational thinking and to help leaders clarify their vision and align their personal, professional, and organizational goals so that they are able to serve their purpose and the broader community from any position.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As the Founder of The DEEPER Leader Institute for Personal and Professional Development, an accredited coaching certification institute, and the creator of DEEPER Women Brands, my greatest accomplishment has been establishing a platform to empower women to share their stories of life, love, and leadership freeing other women to lead themselves as effectively as they've led their teams and organizations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, my greatest challenge has been scaling my business to match my vision for coaching, training, and certifying life and leadership coaching worldwide with consistency.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Seek clarity... the clarity of identity, purpose, and vision. Clarity will ensure that you're pursuing the dream or business that is right for you and aligned with who you truly are, why you're here, and where you want to be.
  2. Examine your life to identify any pattern of behavior or limiting beliefs that may impede your progress along the way.
  3. Come up with a plan of action and FOLLOW THE PLAN. Dedicate the necessary time, energy, and financial resources to support your dream!
