Enhance Your Child’s Educational Experience - Debra Arbuthnot
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debra Arbuthnot, Owner of A+ Publishing LLC dba Homeschool Complete, located in Ocala, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Homeschool Complete publishes an all-inclusive elementary curriculum so homeschoolers can confidently teach their children. The curriculum design eliminates the need to write any lesson plans or create activities so parents can spend time with their children instead of planning. Our curriculum and additional resources are used by homeschool families, homeschool co-ops, private schools, daycares, and preschools. The curricula aligns with accepted grade-level standards so homeschool parents and teachers can be confident they are teaching the skills necessary in each grade level.
Tell us about yourself
While homeschooling my three children, I was unable to find a quality program that was affordable and fun. I began writing my own unit-study-style curriculum that contained interactive activities and quality literature. I also wanted content that provided opportunities for meaningful conversations with my children. After my children graduated from high school and I finished my teaching career, I decided to write and publish curricula that would help parents easily and successfully homeschool their children.
As a certified teacher and a homeschooling mom, I have a passion for teaching and helping others. I am motivated by knowing that the product I provide gives others the opportunity to teach children in a fun and effective way.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is writing a kindergarten through the fifth-grade program that helps parents and children successfully homeschool. Because the open-and-go program is so easy to use, parents are able to teach one or more children effectively. Hearing from those who have used Homeschool Complete is one of the brightest spots in my day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is time management. Many tasks require my attention, and prioritizing them is important to success. Knowing how to scale the business for potential growth is also a challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose a product or service you enjoy providing and feel would benefit others. When you believe what you have to share has value, it is easier to handle the ups and downs that come with starting and growing a business.
- Expect ups and downs. Growth can be slow, and work is time-consuming, but the results from consistent effort are rewarding.
- Surround yourself with a support system. During the time when there are so many tasks to organize and complete, take a break and spend time with those who encourage you.
