Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with D'Angelo Connell, Owner of DC The Snapper, located in Memphis, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a photographer, and my clients are pretty much anyone that needs photos. I mostly photograph events, headshots, and portraits/lifestyles.
Tell us about yourself
I've always understood the power of photography, even as a kid. I remember being at my grandmother's place, looking at old photos of her, my mother, aunts, and uncles. Some of my older cousins were included in them as well. I was always amazed because just looking at the photos takes you back to a time that no longer existed. But that moment is forever accessible as long as those photos are around. The power of a photo and a photographer is to freeze time and all the memories, feeling, and emotions along with it. I pride myself on making sure the photos I take are elegant and imaginative, though I never strive for perfection. I'm more interested in capturing the moment and telling the story of that moment through photography.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have worked with some amazing people and organizations during that time. Amongst them are the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Christian Brothers High School, Memphis Film Works, University of Memphis, University Club Memphis, City of Memphis, River Arts Fest, Dixon Gallery and Garden, Community in Schools Memphis, Memphis, and Medical District Collaborative. My goal is to continue that growth and build long-lasting relationships throughout the process. I'm also certified by the City of Memphis and Shelby County Government as an SBE and MBE.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
There were times I had to figure out which bills I would pay because they were all due, and I didn't have enough money available to cover them all. But in those moments, I simply trust the work I put into making connections and building relationships.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have patience during downtime. Trust the work you put into your business but also never feel completely satisfied with what you've done.
- It's OK to want to be the best in your field, but you should do your best to turn competitors into allies. If you can help each other out in a way it's not compromising your business, and you all can mutually benefit from it, you should consider it.
- Be prepared to wear many hats. I'm learning marketing and accounting to help keep my business organized as it grows.
