Tell us about yourself
My creative marketing and SEO career began in college when I started an event company with my friends. I was tasked with create flyers and drive awareness of events every weekend throughout Texas State University. As soon as I started playing with photoshop and guerilla marketing, I was bit by the entrepreneur bug. Fast forward to post-college, I worked for my Mom's marketing agency, where I started as a project manager learning the ins and outs of how a marketing agency works. This was a great place to start, but I was never meant to be a project manager and knew that I was destined to be a creative of some sort, but I just didn't know what that looked like yet. Then one Christmas party (by Luxury Bar) changed it all. I hired a videographer to film and edit my legendary Christmas party, but as fate would have it, the videographer did not have time to edit the video, so I took it upon myself to edit the video where the creative spark exploded. I thought, "This is fun, I could do this for my own parties and maybe others."
So what did I do? I bought a camera, learned how to edit, and filmed my own videos; then BOOM ... friends and family started reaching out to hire me for their events. Not only did I now have a side hustle, but I was also filming & editing for the agency, working with big brands, and gaining experience at a fast pace. Now that my portfolio was growing, I knew I had to market myself for more potential work to see where this could go - so, what did I do? I hopped on YouTube to learn how to build websites with WordPress, and the next phase of my career took off like a rocket. After a year or so of grinding through projects and learning by trial & error, I was able to build websites, film & edit videos, animate cinema ads, audio mix radio ads, and much more.
My mom's agency eventually closed its doors, so I decided to go elsewhere or start my own agency. I went for it and started my agency, where Day by Day Digital was born. I reached out to everyone in my network, offering free videos, websites, photography - anything to get the buzz out about the new agency and never looked back. I quickly learned that when you leverage your family & friends network to start a business, you never know what doors will open and what opportunities come next. The power of word of mouth is undeniable. Day by Day Digital has now been open for over 5 years with 8 employees, all from family & friends word of mouth.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been surviving through the first wave of COVID-19 shutdowns and thriving because of it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing as a business owner is having the discipline & drive to take advantage of every single day to grow the business, as well as have the fortitude to grind through the first few years.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Set your expectations - it is going to take years for your business to grow and for you to actually start making money in your pocket.
- Leverage your network - family & friends is always a great place to start giving out free work or services to begin word of mouth along with reviews.
- Prioritize your day - start each day by setting up your top three priorities that have to be done that day to move forward.
