Take Better Photos - David Johnston
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Johnston, Owner of Landscape Photography University, located in Jackson, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Landscape Photography University is more than just a platform for people to improve their photography. It's more of a movement of like-minded landscape photographers bent on enhancing their photos by being life-long students of photography.
Tell us about yourself
I first got started in landscape photography in 2010. Since then, I've worked to create things that didn't work. I love landscape photography, but what excites me the most is showing others how to take the photos of their dreams.
When I first came up with the concept of Landscape Photography University, everything just fell into place. The lessons I learned from things that didn't work led me to this fantastic journey with LPU.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My first sale, hands down. It wasn't even that much money, but it proved that all the hard work was worth it. Also, the person who bought the first copy of my first course on landscape photography composition said it was the same course they needed. That one review will fuel me until the end because I know there are more people out there I can help that are just like them.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Balancing family time and business time. If you have a business you've started, you know that it's like your baby. You must foster it, spend time with it, and help it grow. When you have a family and kids, you must do the same for them. It's so easy to escape into the business, but you have to think about your family's legacy first.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do it.
- Do it.
- Do it.
Believe it or not, you're an expert on something. There's some topic you know more about than 95% of the world's population. That could be engineering or videography. It could even be building with Legos. We live in an age where you can help people and monetize your passion. It's scary. There's no doubt about that. But you must think about how alarming it will be if you wait even longer to start it. Punch fear in the face and take control of your passion.
